Book Review: Anthesis

“Physically, I was conquering him, but emotionally, he’d already conquered me.”

This book was a fantastic summer read. I found it through bookstagram and it drew me in. The cover is absolutely gorgeous and the dark vibes of the book are what really sold it to me. The book has man-eating sirens, mystery and murder. I recommend this book who likes dark vibes, and who likes modern fantasy. It had some great troupes like, found family, hate to love and a lot of angst. Huge thank you to the author for sending me an ARC!

The story is told in the first person from Aglasia’s POV. The plot was focused on Aglasia and Rossa as they tried to find a way to turn a man into a siren. There was not much overlapping between events, everything was moving from one point to the other which made reading easy. It was a fairly quick read for me and it read at a good pace. The plot sometimes was confusing with lost memories and our characters being ancient. It was hard to track how characters were related to each other when the characters themselves didn’t even know. By the end of the book, it did get all explain and made a good path for the next book to follow. I’m hoping to see more about the history of sirens and how they came to be. The sirens and their magic and very interesting and it was detailed and explained well. They were quite unique in their magic and had a system, unlike others I’ve seen.

The two main characters are Aglasia and Rossa. Aglasia is on a strict diet where she will only feed monthly while Rossa feeds whenever she wants. This causes a lot of tension and drama between the two. A lot of the book follows the relationship between these two and how it grows and develops. They were written well and you could get a good sense of their goals and motivations.

There wasn’t too much romance in the book with the girls feeding on the men before too many feelings can develop. The one guy that Aglasia sees more than once is Hunter. Hunter is a lovable character, cute, shy and awkward but Aglasia spends most of the book bashing him. Her character goes back and forth between him, wanting him than hating him, thinking he’s an okay dude, to saying he’s an idiot. I hope the relationship between these two is developed more in the following book because there is lots of potential!

Like I said before I devoured this book! It was a great summer read to get in before school started. Congrats to Lauren on her first book, wish you the best!! A huge thanks for being sent an ARC copy. It has great characters, a well-thought-out plot and a great set-up for a sequel. If you liked the aesthetic and vibes of To Kill a Kingdom then I’d recommend this book to you.
